We here at Cartoon Lagoon love COUNT CHOCULA, FRANKEN BERRY and BOO BERRY, collectively known as “the MONSTER cereals”! We are proud to present a little seen original music video we worked on featuring clips from many, MANY vintage MONSTER cereal commercials from the 70′s and 80′s.
TURN UP YOUR SPEAKERS and watch this FULL SCREEN:
Jeff used audio clips from a free FLEXI DISC record given away inside COUNT CHOCULA, FRANKENBERRY and BOO BERRY cereal in the late 70′s. FLEXI discs were flimsy records you could press cheaply and place in magazines or in this case cereal boxes. There were 3 in total.
1. Monster Adventures In Outer Space
2. The Monsters Go Disco
3. Count Chocula Goes To Hollywood
Here’s an extra special treat for you all, an original animated piece made to the flexi disc called “MONSTERS GO DISCO”. It’s never been completed or officially released or promoted.
I can’t think of a bunch of characters more deserving of a HALLOWEEN special than CHOCULA and the gang. Why this doesn’t exist already is beyond me. Here’s a small taste of what it could have looked like as animated by CHRIS ROMANO:
The very first commercial for COUNT CHOCULA and FRANKEN BERRY was animated by BILL MELENDEZ who is best known for working on the PEANUTS holiday specials. Which also explains why PEPPERMINT PATTY’s twin brother appears at the very end.
The Monster cereals are only available exclusively one time a year now around Halloween so be on the look out at your local WALMART and TARGET.
FUN FACT: In February 1972, Franken Berry cereal included dye that turned some children’s feces pink due to an inability to break down the heavily dyed breakfast food, a symptom sometimes referred to as “Frankenberry Stool.”
By the way, what was the deal with BOO BERRY’s nipple chains?
